Lockdown Literature 5.1

Hi all,

Thank you for sending through your ‘because, but, so’s in the last few days. I’ll be sending feedback on them today. Before you go on, just make sure you did last week’s quiz – there are still a couple missing.

I know I’ve given you a lot of reading in the past week, so I’ll try to go a little easier on you this week. Here’s what I’d like you to do:

2) Remind yourself about the conventions of the bildungsroman genre:

If you want to delve deeper, this explanation is very good.

3) In your exercise book, under the title Pip’s journey – symbolism and bildungsroman, write a sentence or two to explain the symbolic significance of the following moments in terms of Pip’s journey:

  • his long walk back to London
  • his night at the Hummums
  • the appearance of Compeyson at the theatre

For each of these moments, try to explain why Dickens might have included it – and what it might represent.

It would be great if you could show me your work in an email. I'll do it too and share mine later. Please get in touch if you need help.

4) Finally, read chapters 48 and 49. They’re fairly short, but full of revelations and drama. 49 is amazing! My notes are in the email I sent this morning.

That’s it for now. By Friday, we’ll only be ten chapters from the end!

This is a proper achievement – especially under the circumstances!

Take care,

Mr M
